5 realistic ways to become a better public speaker 🎤
In my last blog post I talked about the illusive “perfect 10” when it comes to public speaking last week. We compare ourselves to somebody who would do our presentation perfectly, with design-award worthy slides and even funny jokes, the audience loves.
They would have everybody's approval at their finger tips compared to our fingers that can’t stop shaking and we don’t know what to do with.
So, of course there are a myriad of things you could do that take a lot of effort and energy in the pursuit perfection - or you could do these 5 simple things and maybe not reach a perfect 10 - because who does? - but maybe up your public speaking game by 2 points and reach a comfortable 7. What do you think? Sounds good? So let’s take a look:
Be prepared. It sounds like something obvious, but preparing properly for important meetings/speeches/presentations is a kind of self-care.
Practice the first 3 sentences. You have only a few seconds for people to make up their minds about you. When you are completely confident in those first 3 sentences that you are going to say, you will have projected confidence already.
Be present. Before you start to speak, become present inside your body. Feel your feet on the ground, feel the energy of the room, connect to your breath and become fully present in your body.
Sing a song. Either in your car or at home while you’re getting ready, release some of the tension you feel, by belting out “Unstoppable” by Sia for example (but pay attention to not strain your vocal chords).
Connect to your breath. Breathe consciously through your nose while you are getting ready, while you are walking into the room, while you are sitting down or standing in front of your audience. Connect to your breath and to your body.
Of course I still have a myriad of other simple tips like these 😉 but the 5 tips above are the first that I would recommend you to do and see whether you can get a few steps closer to feeling confident in sharing the immense value you bring to the world.
Your voice is your gift, and the key to your most authentic and sensational self. Allow yourself to share it with the people who need you. ✨
With lots of positive vibes 🌈
