5 ways to make your voice your ally 👯
I think one of the biggest reasons we hold ourselves back from speaking or singing, is that we are not connected enough to our voice. We just use it when we have to, but never take a moment to really get to know it.
Then in situations where we wished we could speak with more confidence, we feel this disconnect. It becomes apparent when we hear a recording of our voice, or when we feel nervous in front of people listening to us and the sound of our voice is all of a sudden different from what we are used to.
We then tend to externalize our voice and see it as something separate from ourselves. Like it’s this annoying thing, we need to control or tame, and we don't know how. So we disconnect even more.
The thing is: your voice is an important part of you. It's how you connect with the world. And the more you are connected to yourself the easier it is to connect with others.
There is this saying: What you pay attention to, grows. So take the time to pay loving attention to your voice and it will become stronger, you will feel connected to it, and it will feel like home to you.
Here are 5 ways you can try out this week to feel more connected to your voice:
pay attention to your breath: in what situations are you holding your breath or running out of breath - in which situations do you feel your breathing is relaxed
hum: sit or stand comfortably, close our eyes, breathe deeply in through your nose and then let your voice flow through a hum - pay attention to what the vibrations feel like in your body
sing a song and really pay attention to how it makes you feel to sing rather than what it sounds like
brain dump all the reasons you feel awkward about your voice - and then ask yourself whether those are good reasons to hold yourself back
write down all the reasons, you are "allowed" or qualified to use your voice and what positive change you could create by using it with confidence
Your voice is your gift, and the key to your most authentic and magnificent self. Make it your ally ✨
