What to do when you don’t like the sound of your voice on recordings

Updated: Feb 15, 2023

It is a fact that our voice sounds different in our head than it does in the ears of our listeners.

It’s a fact that it sounds a bit higher than it does in our own ears. Every voice does.

We are used to sounding a certain way, and when we hear the sound of our voices differently without the filter of our own ears, we are shocked, embarrassed or even ashamed.

So as a result we avoid being recorded or having to listen to ourselves at any cost, because being faced with this feeling of shame is so uncomfortable that avoiding it definitely seems like the better strategy.

But what happens when you notice that your negative feelings around your voice are actually stopping you from advancing in your business or your career? When you rather avoid saying yes to opportunities than having to go through the agonizing process of listening to a recording of your voice?

This is where I come in. This is why I am writing this and this is why I do what I do - because of the limits we put on ourselves when we are ashamed of our voices. Because of the amazing value that we have to give, but don’t because we cannot stand the way listening to ourselves makes us feel.

Here are 5 questions to ask yourself if you cannot stand the sound of your voice on recordings:

  1. What do I hate or dislike about my voice? Be very specific?

  2. What is the benefit of me hating my voice?

  3. What has your voice helped you achieve in your life and in what way does it serve you on a daily basis?

  4. What would be different in my life if I actually liked my voice on recordings?

  5. What opportunities would I say yes to if I didn’t have this issue?

I think being very clear on these questions can help you become more conscious of what your part is in perpetuating this feeling of not being good enough.

And then you can decide whether you want to change it ;)

I have created a mini- online course to boost your confidence in accepting the sound of your voice in recordings. You can find it here.

I also have a video about this on my Youtube channel, you can check it out here.

I hope these tips were useful. If you could need some guidance in becoming more confident creating videos or sharing your voice with your audience in general - book a 30 free discovery call with me here. You can also check out my coaching program here.

And if you have read this post and tried out one or some of my tips, feel free to send me an email and tell me about it.
